Tetrionics To Manufacture Zemplar Ingredient

Under a new agreement, Tetrionics, Inc. is to manufacture Paricalcitol for Abbott Laboratories, Inc. Paricalcitol is the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in Abbott's Zemplar product. The API will be manufactured at Tetrionics' Madison, WI facility.

A synthetic vitamin D analog, Paricalcitol is a complex molecule. "The 27-step synthesis of the Zemplar API yields material with purities greater than 99.8%," said Dr. Herb Paaren, vice president of Tetrionics. "Many of today's drugs today require ten or fewer synthetic steps and are only required to be 99.5% pure." Tetrionics currently has five compounds in pre-clinical and clinical studies and produces bulk and lab-scale bioactive chemicals for large pharmaceutical companies.
