The Formulation Of Viscous Simethicone Into Chewable Tablets

Source: Grace

Chewable tablets are preferred by most of the formulators for addressing the ailments related to GIT, especially digestion. Formulators often find it challenge to make tablets of liquid Simethicone due to its viscosity. Simethicone is viscous, greyish-white, opalescent preparation used as anti-foaming agent to prevent formation of gas in gastro intestinal tract. As per USP, it is a mixture of fully methylated linear siloxane polymers containing repeating units of the formula [–(CH3)2SiO–]n, stabilized with trimethylsiloxy end-blocking units of the formula [(CH3)3 SiO–], and silicon dioxide. It contains not less than 90.5 percent and not more than 99.0 percent of polydimethylsiloxane ([–(CH3)2SiO–]n), and not less than 4.0 percent and not more than 7.0 percent of silicon dioxide.

Grace’s SYLOID® 244 FP silica is highly porous and an excellent solution for converting viscous Simethicone into compressible free flowing powder to make chewable tablets.
