Enviroflex opened their first East Coast office on Long Island exactly one year ago. "Our goal has been to focus on the pharmaceutical and biotech business concentration in the New York-New Jersey area," said John Potter, who heads the Katona office. "We're securing projects while networking with local reps and companies to build up a high-tech consortium of energetic people who want to make a difference in the cleanroom industry."

Enviroflex offers what it calls "turnkey" clean laboratories. "Years ago I'd go to a meeting with a potential customer and there'd be twenty people at the meeting. People could afford to have a huge bureaucracy for making their cleanroom purchasing decisions. Today it's one or two individuals, who can't possibly know about everything they need, or keep track of the project as it progresses."

Enviroflex therefore builds cleanrooms around processes. Their projects include the cleanroom construction, exhaust, freezers, refrigerators, instrumentation, process instruments, lab benches and furniture, custom work surfaces, and specialized utilities. The company also handles validation. "We also integrate environmental control with process control," Potter added, "so you only need to validate one system, not two or four or ten."

Potter identified the transfer of technology and techniques between industries using cleanrooms as an emerging trend. "Everyone knows about semiconductor-to-pharmaceutical," he stated, "but there's a lot of exchange going in the opposite direction too."
