Blister Package Integrity Testing Using Non-Destructive Methods

By Oliver Stauffer, CEO, PTI Inspection Systems
Blister package manufacturing consists of plastic formed into cavities that house the tablet or the capsules and then sealed on the back with a lidding material (usually aluminum foil, paper or plastic). It provides barrier protection designed for long and temper proof shelf life by eliminating moisture ingress and contamination. Leak testing is done to ensure that the integrity of the blister packs is not compromised. Dye ingress leak testing and Vacuum Decay are the most common methods used for leak testing blister packages, and this article will discuss some of the pros and cons to each method of leak testing.
