By Syed Muaz Khalil, Wen Yang Tsai, Ashwin Gurunathan, Matt Rosecrans, Aaron Robinson, Bilal Mughal, Anna Barbara Hachmann, Stacy Holdread, and James W. Brooks

The study examines the use of animal-origin free (AOF) peptones in viral vector vaccine production, focusing on Adenovirus (AdV5) and Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) production in HEK293 and Vero cells. The research found that peptones, derived from the hydrolysis of plants, yeast, or animal tissues, can improve the production process by enhancing cell growth and viral vector production. Explore the results that supported TCY and Phytone peptones ability to improve cell growth in suspension HEK293 cell culture, while Wheat peptone caused cell clumping. The study suggests that using Gibco® catalog peptones could provide value to vaccine manufacturers by enhancing cell growth and viral vaccine production, serving as an alternative to reduce or eliminate serum from the cell culture process.
