Sterile Filter Membrane Selection For Cell Culture Media Filtration

Sterile filtration of cell culture media requires a careful balance between microbial retention, throughput, and operating pressure. Testing with a high-fouling media surrogate compared five 0.2 µm multilayer PES filters under identical constant-flow conditions. The Thermo Scientific LifeASSURE PDA020 filter maintained lower upstream pressure and processed 1,051 L/m² before reaching the defined endpoint, delivering 34% greater capacity than the next-highest-performing membrane. Its dual-layer design combines progressive particle capture with sterilizing-grade retention, helping extend processing time while limiting system complexity. When scaled to a theoretical 2,000 L batch, the results indicated that a single 30-inch capsule could provide the required filtration area.
