Tablet Consistency And Punch Length – A Pragmatic Perspective For European Manufacturers
By William “Bill” Turner, technical service manager – tooling and tablets
Standards are vital across industries, including tablet manufacturing, where consistency ensures safety and quality. While punch length tolerance often dominates the discussion, this article stresses that true tablet uniformity depends on a broader set of factors: formulation, press mechanics, and tooling precision.
Formulation is the foundation of consistency. Blend density, particle size distribution, and morphology affect fill volume, compaction, hardness, and the likelihood of defects. Variability in these parameters can alter weight and strength, requiring tight formulation control.
Tablet press mechanics also influence outcomes. Die table run out and pressure roll imperfections can alter weight and thickness, yet these mechanical nuances are often overlooked in troubleshooting.
Tooling tolerances matter, but their influence is frequently overstated. European manufacturers typically follow ISO 18084 with a ±0.01mm working length (W.L.) tolerance, compared with the broader ±0.025mm under U.S. TSM. Data shows even a ±0.02mm W.L. tolerance produces tablets well within weight and thickness specifications, with thickness variation under 1% and weight variation under 0.3%.
Practical application emphasizes consistency across a punch set over absolute values. Matching reports, which pair punches to minimize total indicated run-out, enhance uniformity and extend tooling viability. Automated inspection systems, such as Natoli’s TM-II, can generate these reports for both new and used tooling.
Maintaining tighter tolerances requires costly, sensitive measurement equipment and frequent calibration. Environmental factors, like temperature, can skew results, underscoring the trade-off between precision and practicality.
Conclusion: Punch length tolerance has an impact, but it is only one part of the equation. A holistic approach—balancing formulation control, press maintenance, and realistic tolerance standards—enables European manufacturers to achieve consistent, high-quality tablets without unnecessary cost burdens.
